10,000 Students of PhilanthropyAugust 8, 2013
A longstanding tradition meets a new audience and emerging technology in this first massive open online course (MOOC) on philanthropy. The course, taught by Rebecca Riccio, founder of Northeastern University’s Students4Giving program, and backed by Warren Buffett and his sister, Doris has drawn great interest: 10,000 students from 70 countries and all over the U.S. enrolled for the free six-week course.
According to the L.A. Times, Doris Buffett “believes fervently that young people need to be taught how to give money away. It hasn’t been modeled by our families as much as she thinks it should.” During the course, in which students will not earn official college credit, students will evaluate a number of nonprofit organizations and their goals and donate $10,000 to the most deserving groups.
